Beads of Clay Classes at Bead and Button Show


This year there are two ceramic bead making classes being offered at the Bead and Button Show in Milwaukee at the Midwest Airlines Center . Both teachers, Sharleen Newland and Jennifer Heynen, are Beads of Clay members.

B08414 Making and Glazing Ceramic Beads
Sharleen Newland

Wed. & Thu. June 4 & 5 • 8:00am-3:00pm (with 1 hr. break) - (12 hours)


Level: Beginner

Maximum Class Size: 12

Class Fee: $315.00

Technique: Ceramic Beads


Description: This class will focus on rolling different shapes and sizes of ceramic beads from low-fire earthenware clay. We will cover shaping the beads, making the holes, and bisque-firing on the first day. The clay beads will be fired overnight. The next day, we will cover different ways of glazing the beads and how to glaze-fire them, including methods of how to suspend the beads in the kiln.

Project will be completed in class.

Student must be at least 16 years old to register for this class.

Supplies to Bring: Knitting needle (fine), paintbrush (fine), paintbrush (flat), paintbrush (pointed), reading glasses, rubber stamps, ruler, terry-cloth towel, task lamp. Materials in Kit: Clay and glazes, bamboo sticks for making holes.

Instructor will provide bead rollers and clay extruder gun for extruding and rolling the beads. There is not an individual kit for each student with this class. All materials will be shared by the class. Limit: One seat per person per class.

B08411 Making Ceramic Beads, Pendants, Links, and Components

Class Fee: $175.00


Technique: Ceramic Beads

Description: This creative and fun class will teach everything students need to know about ceramic bead making. Students will learn basic shaped beads, pendants, links, and components. The instructor will teach embedding high-temperature wire, loading a kiln, and more bead-making secrets. Students will also decorate their beads with underglazes, which are capable of many effects, including a watercolor look. After firing, students will have a stash of approximately 30–50 ceramic beads to take home for their own designs. Project will be completed in class. Student must be at least 12 years old to register for this class.


Supplies to Bring: None.

Materials in Kit: Ceramic clay, work surface, sponges, hole maker, high-temperature wire, underglazes, paintbrushes, needle tool. All necessary supplies are included in the kit.

Limit: One seat per person per class.
